The Alliance of British Drivers is a voluntary and non-profit-making organisation whose aim is to provide an active, responsible voice to lobby for Britain's beleaguered drivers.
We campaign upon a wide range of driving issues, free of any vested interest. We are not afraid to tackle government or councils who so often see drivers as a cash cow to be milked at will.
The ABD was formed to fight for the interests of the everyday motorist — in other words most of us. UK drivers are some of the most heavily taxed in the world, and yet we have one of the worst road networks in the western world and suffer more from traffic congestion than the residents of almost all other countries. In addition, road safety policy, environmental strategy, and planning laws have become dominated by "anti-car" factions who do not represent the voice of the general public.
The ABD seeks formal recognition that the UK needs to better maintain and significantly improve its road infrastructure. Congestion and delays caused by inadequate roads impose a massive cost on the economy and quality of life.
The ABD calls for the use of sensible speed limits that are based upon well established scientific road safety principles, not political correctness, emotive hysteria, or vociferous local activists.
The ABD demands an end to the abuse of speed cameras for extorting money from drivers; and a return to the 3 E's of road safety — Education, Engineering, & Enforcement.
We reveal the scientific truth behind the scare stories about climate change, and the impact cars have on health and the environment. We call for technological solutions, not punitive restrictions.
Why You Should Join Us Private cars provide the most flexible, and most cost effective transport mode, and are used for more than 85% of journeys. Those who wish you to stop using your car often have vested interests in public transport or otherwise wish to curtail your freedom. Joining the ABD means you can help to fight these unreasonable attacks.
